²Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, ^threeAccording every bit his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the noesis of him that hath called us to celebrity and virtue: ⁴Whereby are given unto u.s.a. exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the abuse that is in the world through animalism. ⁵ And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; ⁶And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; ⁷And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. ^viiiFor if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be arid nor unfruitful in the noesis of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Wesley's Notes for 2 Peter 1:5

1:5 For this very reason - Because God hath given you so keen blessings. Giving all diligence - It is a very uncommon word which we render giving. It literally signifies, bringing in by the by, or over and above: implying, that good works the work; yet not unless we are diligent. Our diligence is to follow the gift of God, and is followed past an increase of all his gifts. Add to - And in all the other gifts of God. Superadd the latter, without losing the old. The Greek word properly ways lead up, as in dance, one of these subsequently the other, in a cute order. Your faith, that evidence of things not seen, termed before the knowledge of God and of Christ, the root of all Christian graces. Backbone - Whereby ye may conquer all enemies and difficulties, and execute any faith dictates. In this virtually beautiful connexion, each preceding grace leads to the following; each following, tempers and perfects the preceding. They are gear up down in the society of nature, rather than the social club of time. For though every grace bears a relation to every other, yet here they are then nicely ranged, that those which have the closest dependence on each other are placed together. And to your courage cognition - Wisdom, pedagogy how to practise it on all occasions.

2Pe one:five And beside this. "Yea, and for this very cause" (Revised Version). Considering God has called you with precious promises. What God has done calls on us to practise our part. Giving all diligence. "Adding on your part all diligence" (Revised Version). No exertion must exist spared. At that place must be the fullest co-functioning with God. Add together to your faith virtue. "In your faith supply virtue" (Revised Version). The Common Version is wrong. Faith is the basis of the Christian life and all are expected to possess it, but out of it must grow other excellencies. And to virtue. "And in [your virtue]" (Revised Version). Moral courage, the natural fruit of a trusting faith in God. Noesis. The moral heroism must be guided by knowledge or information technology will run into "a zeal of God, simply not according to cognition" (Ro x:ii).
